Rooftop
The clients approached Strukt Architects with the idea of purchasing a property in a prominent commercial strip in Port Elizabeth. Amongst local developers the word was that this particular property was incorrectly zoned for commercial use but with a lot of persistence the clients obtain the property, changed the zoning and the project was a go ahead to design and build the new offices for Rooftop Productions.
The existing building was ordinary and unassuming, I had never noticed it before and for our first site appointment drove straight passed it. The building was originally designed as a church and although it was somewhat outdated and rundown what was left behind was an interesting structure with a massive volume and usable space.
Rooftop Productions, a production company with a big international clientele, is run by two extremely enthusiastic owners with an immense amount of energy which definitely set the tone for the project moving forward. We tried to capture the friendly, fun nature of the company in the spaces that we created whilst maintaining an element of a formal, functional office environment. In addition to the formal office spaces, meeting rooms and production studios required we choose to incorporate a centralised social space and communal kitchen area where staff can take a break from their desk environment and mingle with fellow colleagues.
